The coyotes they sing out here
In the dark before the cockadoodle crows
And the freedom of daylight draws near
The coyotes howl a painful song to my ears
And I hear less hope than a sad Negro Spiritual
Sung by mothers in tears
So I asked Coyote
Why he does the things he does
And he replied to me softly
“Because I am my father’s son.”
But I told him that
“Things can change
They don’t have to stay the same”
But he stopped me and he said
“Arghhh-wooooo
I’m a slave to the moon
Arghhh-wooooo
I’m a Coyote and it’s just what we do”
The coyotes
Oh, they waste their time out here
In the dark chasing their own tails
Running in circles of fear
So I asked Coyote
Why he does the things he does
And he replied to me softly
“Because I am my father’s son.”
But I told him that
“Things can change
They don’t have to stay the same”
But he stopped me and he said
“Arghhh-wooooo
I’m a slave to the moon
Arghhh-wooooo
I’m a Coyote and it’s just what we do”
Oooo, but I told him that
“You don’t have to have
The bitter taste in your mouth no more
From the sour grapes your parents ate
That was their choice not your’s
I believe a father’s child can change their own ways
And I know that this is something that I’ve said before
But there’s time and these things can be restored.”
And I won’t stop until we all make it there
And we will sing a new song like
“Arghhh-wooooo
We are slaves to no thing, no thing
Arghhh-wooooo
It’s for freedom we have been set free!”
